2013 Developments In Cancer Incidence, Detection and Treatment

The incidence of cancer is expected to increase by 50 per cent in the next two decades, and scientists are gearing up for this upcoming era with the best possible cancer treatments. Cancer research and development is never in stasis, and the research keeps evolving with every passing day.

The recent developments have shown some startling trends for treatments of different kinds of cancer. Various cancer treatments like haematopoietic growth factors, stem cell transplants, bone marrow transplants, biological therapies, and surgery, have improved by leaps and bounds as we enter 2013.

Latest Advancements in Cancer Cure

Advancements have been made in cancer cure; however, the nature of this metastatic disease is such that it seems to seep in all the effort put in by scientists, and keeps asking for more.

One of the most common cancers is breast cancer, which is likely to attack an estimated 232,340 individuals in 2013, according to a report. The survival rate for breast cancer has drastically increased to 90 percent lately. Latest research suggests chemoprevention as an effective preventive measure for this cancer, where a retinoid named Fenretinide is used. This drug provides hope for women with high risk (genetic risk) of breast cancer.

Improvements to Cancer Detection

Scintimammography, tomosynthesis, and CAD have also taken breast cancer detection to a new level, and this will help in early detection of tumors and inflammation. Latest techniques like oncoplastic and reconstruction surgeries will make mastectomies more effective and hopefully less traumatic.

Colorectal cancer has also become prevalent in the past few decades. This deadly cancer is being combated more furiously with developments in genetic tests for colorectal cancer chances, chemoprevention, and therapies.

Even though the fatal cancer is not curable, the life expectancy of those at risk and those suffering from colorectal cancer has increased greatly. Targeted drug therapy has also been introduced for treatment in initial stages of colorectal cancer.

In 2013, scientists expect an estimated 48,610 individuals to be diagnosed with leukemia. Due to the high emergence of this cancer in varying age groups, the research for leukemia is always in full swing. Many efforts have been made by scientists to defeat this rampant cancer; recently the AIDS virus was also used to find a cure.

A recent development in leukemia treatment involves a gene therapy that mutates the patient’s RBC’s into assassin cells that will hunt down the cancer. Even though this research is not widely tested, it is a very hopeful one.

Other researches revealed recently suggest that there are natural foods and ingredients that have probable potency to fight cancer; e.g. there is a Mediterranean food that apparently combats prostate cancer.

Latest in Cancer Research

The latest studies in cancer have not only improved survival rates through treatment, but also via prevention methods and timely cancer detection techniques. More scientists are converging towards cancer treatment, and many students are enrolling for medical billing and coding certification in Miami and other major metropolitan cities to help in related researches.
