Treatment for Missing Teeth

Dental Implants are artificial “root devices” that are attached by a periodontist into the jaw to support a replacement tooth and are commonly manufactured from titanium material.

Dental implants are used primarily used to replace tooth loss or teeth as they are formed to resemble the appearance of a real tooth or set of teeth; in fact all the dental implants at present are root-form endosseous which makes them possess a root-form like the real tooth root. They look and feel natural; nobody will ever know that you lost a tooth. They are attached to the bone of the jaw and there will a difference when it comes to how it feels when eating compared to the real teeth because they do not have periodontal ligament.

What are the benefits?
Dental implants have a lot of benefits. It can boost someone’s self-confidence because they can smile anytime, anywhere without being shy for having blank spaces in their teeth. It is also a better option than dentures that feel very awkward, non-secure and difficult when it comes to eating. Implants can also last for life especially if you give them extra special treatment. Implants do not only replace teeth; they also hold a bridge which makes it unnecessary to obtain a denture and they also hold dentures firmly to secure them.

How do Dental Implants work?

The implants used at present are the endosteal and sub-periosteal implants. Endosteal implant means “in the bone” and the usually obtained implant. This kind of implant is associated with blades, screws and cylinders which are attached to the bone of the jaw. It supports more than a single prosthetic tooth and is the implant of choice for individuals who have removable dentures or bridges.

Subperiosteal means “on the bone”, thus it is attached above the jaw and the posts of the metal framework jut in the gum to support the prosthetic tooth or teeth. This is the implant of choice for individuals who are not capable of using conventional dentures.

How does the treatment work?

The treatment course will be discussed by your periodontist, dentist and you.

The periodontist and dentist will check where the area for implanting is and how the implants must be attached. After the consultation, the procedure will begin. The dental implants will be attached to the jawbone through a tender surgical approach. The individual will be sedated.

In several weeks, bone remodelling will take place where bone will grow in the surface where the implants are. After which, the dentist will attach an abutment to every implant and the tooth replacements will be fastened to the small connector posts. Fabrication of replacement teeth will follow and will be performed by a professional dental implant lab technician.
